syrians in the u-s next year. all but one of those governors are republican. opposition to the resettlement plans exploded after it was revealed at least one suspect in the paris attacks slipped into europe posing as a syrian refugee. governors in seven states have said they will accept refugees and several others haven't commented on the issue. jack: iowa governor terry branstad first said that he would leave it up to the federal government to decide -- but a few hours later, he changed his mind. he's ordering all state agencies to halt any work on syrian refugee resettlements immediately. ""branstad :34 we need to be concerned about isis radicals imbedded with these refugees.1:18 we don't want to become like europe where they let these refugees in, and now they're sending police to roundup the dangerous embedded isis militants that are part of it." jack:

legal authority to limit or control immigration. but individual states can limit or deny services to refugee populations. . jack/wxhang governor branstad isn't stopping some iowa organizations from carrying on with their plans to help refugees. local 5's amanda krenz checked in with one of them in sioux city. amanda/wxhang the sioux city area is expecting a large number of refugeesto come work in a new meat processing plant there within the next couple of weeks. and local activists there think branstad's statement is sending the wrong message. "it's counter productive to what we are trying to do to our community. we are trying to help immigrants esepcially refugee immigrants get away from violent war torn areas like syria to become better people. people are coming from syria to better themselves to get out of a violent area and nescassarily to bring harm to us." or send us an email or give us a call . we'd love to hear what you think! the contact information is on your screen. jack: developing now -- we're hearing more details on a single car crash that killed two people in newton. jack: it happened just after noon on i- 80 just east of the iowa speedway exit. four people were in the car when it happened. one of the two who died was a child. iowa state patrol is investigating the accident. they think the driver over corrected and lost control. jack: let's take a look around iowa now. jack: in clayton county -- a pella man is facing an attempted murder charge after police say he drove more than three hours and beat up a woman. the assault happened in elkader on the morning of november 10th. police say this man-- brandon thoma-- drove up from pella and broke in to a woman's home and repeatedly kicked and punched her. she was found by her husband later in the day and taken to the hospital. thoma was later found in wisconsin -- where he remains until they get him extradited. jack: in webster city -- two people are

dead and four others injured after a single car crash just before midnight monday. the accident happened just off highway 20 near exit 140. police say a 19- year-old from south carolina was driving six people when she lost control on the exit ramp and rolled the car several times. the driver and one passenger were killed -- police say neither were wering seatbelts. the four other passengers were hurt, but are in stable condition. one female passenger was listed as a runaway and is now in police custody. jack: and in pella -- one person died and another was injured in a single-car crash on highway 163. police say the driver lost control of his vehicle, went over the shoulder, over corrected and hit a tree. the elderly female passenger was found dead at the scene. her name is being witheld until family is notified. the driver has a head injury. jack/lam the red cross is asking for caution after helping out at more than a dozen fires across the state since last friday.

here's a look at where those fires were. red cross officials say as the weather gets colder, more people are using space heaters -- which are the second leading cause of home fire deaths. to keep safe in the winter months - the red cross has a few tips for you. all heaters need space -- so keep other items like paper, pets and children at least three feet away. never leave a fire in a fireplace unattended -- and always use a fire screen. never use a cook top or oven to heat your home. and always plug space heaters directly into an outlet -- don't use an extension cord. jack: back here in the metro -- police are trying to figure out how a fire was started in the men's bathroom of a restaurant. crews were called to malo monday night, after an employee smelled smoke in the men's bathroom the employee says he found the trash knocked over and a fire by the toilet. the fire was quickly put out -- an investigation is ongoing. jack coming up on
